Spokes are a central component of the wheel. Their role is to connect the hub with the rim and distribute the forces experienced during riding evenly. Spokes have a spoke head at one end, which fixes them in the holes of the hub. At the other end, they feature a thread onto which the nipples are screwed, which sit in the rim bed.

Bike spokes are manufactured in many different diameters and cross-sections. A special type of spoke is the so-called "bladed spoke" (these are flat spokes that are rectangular to oval in cross-section). This type offers a stiffness advantage. A well-known manufacturer of bladed spokes is the Belgian company Sapim ("CX-Ray"). The CX-Ray product line consists of very high-quality spokes, which are only surpassed in terms of weight by the Sapim Superspoke spokes.
