Internal gear hubs were long offered in 5-speed or 7-speed versions. It was only with the introduction of the Speedhub 500/14 by Rohloff that this limitation was broken.

Rohloff managed to fit 14 gears into the hub.

The gears are arranged in sequence without overlap, meaning the gear range has no limitations compared to a 27-speed derailleur system.

Nowadays, Shimano offers an affordable internal gear hub with 11 speeds through the Alfine model.
