Bicycle chains, in combination with chainrings, are essential for the drivetrain of a bicycle.

A chainring is the front gear (mounted on the crankset) and is responsible for the various gear ratios of the drivetrain. The number of chainrings depends on the type of gear system. Hub gears (integrated into the rear wheel hub) and single-speed bikes (with a fixed gear ratio) only have one chainring.

In derailleur systems, however, 2 or 3 chainrings are typically used in combination with the sprocket pack on the rear wheel hub.

The chain is shifted onto one of the front-mounted chainrings via the front derailleur, determining the gear ratio. This allows the rider of the bicycle to adapt to external conditions (such as downhill, uphill, or headwind) and optimize their pedaling effort accordingly.
