Brake pads

Disc brake pads are a central part of the braking system on modern bicycles and play a crucial role in braking performance and safety. These small but important components press against the brake rotor to slow down the bicycle or bring it to a complete stop. There are various types of brake pads that differ in material, performance, and durability, allowing riders to choose the right pads for their specific riding style and conditions.

The most common types of disc brake pads are organic (also known as resin pads) and metallic pads. Organic brake pads are made from a mix of fibers and resin, which makes them particularly quiet and smooth to ride with. They offer gentle braking performance and are ideal for dry conditions and less aggressive riding styles, such as urban commuting or riding on paved roads. However, their downside is that they wear out faster and lose braking power in wet conditions.

Metallic brake pads, also known as sintered pads, are made from metal particles compressed under high pressure. These pads are extremely durable and provide strong braking performance even in extreme conditions, such as wet weather or long descents in mountainous terrain. They are especially popular among mountain bikers and downhill riders because they work reliably even at high temperatures. However, metallic pads are often noisier and put more stress on the brake rotors, which can lead to higher wear.

Another important factor when choosing the right brake pads is their compatibility with the calipers. Manufacturers such as Shimano, SRAM, and Magura offer specific brake pads for their systems to ensure optimal braking power.

Regular maintenance and timely replacement of brake pads are essential to maintain full braking performance and ensure safety while riding. Depending on the riding style and conditions, the pads should be regularly checked for wear and replaced to prevent accidents due to reduced braking power.

Key manufacturers of disc brake pads include: Avid, Jagwire, VAR, Kool Stop, Elvedes, Hayes, TRP, Trickstuff, and Tektro.
