Tubeless tyres don't need inner tubes, which results in a better flat resistance. Road tyres are also made as tubular versions, which don't require inner tubes at all.

Inner tubes are available in different valve types and valve stem sizes. There are Schrader valves (AV), Presta/Sclaverand valves (SV) and the good old Dunlop valve (DV). High profile aero rims require inner tubes with longer valve stems.
