  • Following the well-received introductions of its Dura-Ace and Ultegra 11-speed series component and wheel lines, Shimano introduces its new mechanical 105 5800 series components that also deliver the most lauded features of the new premium 11-speed groups: ultra light action shifting and powerful braking. Designed to inspire riders of all levels, the all-new 105 5800 component group brings top-level performance to the widest range of riders, giving advanced functions, smooth operation and comfortable ergonomics.

The new 105 has an 11-speed drivetrain and adopted some key features from Dura-Ace and Ultegra. The 105 has that same light action and defined click engagement like Dura-Ace and Ultegra. Partly because of the polymer coated cables and partly because of the redesigned derailleurs and shift levers. This clearly shows Shimano’s philosophy of system engineering. All parts are individually designed to work together as one groupset.

Like 9000 Dura-Ace and 6800 Ultegra, Shimano’s new 5800 crankset utilizes a four-arm crankarm design that reduces weight and optimizes power transfer. The 5800 crankset offers a wide range of Rider Tuned gearing options.
The iconic four arm crank trickled down from Dura-Ace to the new 105 and gives the best power transfer and balance between stiffness and lightweight. It also has one bolt circle diameter for compact and traditional double chainsets which means one crankarm fits all chainring size.

Going forward, it looks like the asymmetric 4-bolt chainring bolt patten will become standard with Dura-Ace, Ultegra, and now 105. The standard makes running compact and standard chainrings on the same crank possible, and also means 105 rings will fit Dura Ace cranks and vice versa. Chainrings will be offered in 53-39 and 50-34. Something that hasn’t been covered much is the new bottom bracket tool standards for Shimano’s Dura-Ace and Ultegra cranks. Both require an adapter that fits the old standard outboard BB tool and fits over the BB cup, but Ultegra and Dura Ace require two different adapters. The new 5800 105 group apparently doesn’t have its own BB, so it will use the Ultegra SM-BBR60 which has slightly bigger cups than the DA 9000 BB.

    • Good quality/price ratio
This isn't the lightest crankset from Shimano but it's a very decent Hollowtech one endowed with an attractive price. I recently monted the 52/36 one on my road bike and i'm fairly happy with it.
