The company was founded in 1986 by Bernhard Rohloff, an engineer who was not satisfied with the existing options for bicycle gears. He set out to create a more durable and efficient alternative, and developed the Rohloff Speedhub. The Speedhub is a 14-speed internal gear hub that is enclosed within the rear hub of the bicycle.

    It is known for its durability, reliability and ease of use. The hub has 14 evenly spaced gears, which allows for smooth and precise shifting. It also features a fully sealed design that keeps out dirt and water, making it ideal for use in off-road and touring applications. The hub is also very low maintenance, as it only requires an oil change every 15,000 miles. It is available for a wide range of different bike types, including mountain bikes, touring bikes, and even tandems.
