SAME BUT DIFFERENT Internally, the Ratchet LN uses the same mechanism as the well-known Ratchet system. The difference between the systems lies in the placement of the seal. To ensure compatibility with pawl hub conversions, the seal on Ratchet LN hubs had to be mounted on the freehub body. On hubs with the classic Ratchet system or Ratchet EXP, the seal is on the hub shell.
WHY RATCHET? Ratchet system hubs are unique because all teeth of the two discs engage simultaneously every time. In the case of pawl hubs, the engagement surface is quite small. With the Ratchet system, the full face of the discs meshes, resulting in significantly lower point load. The result is the legendary reliability of Ratchet system hubs.
