Campagnolo has developed a system in which the bottom bracket axle halves are permanently connected to the respective crank arms. This design reduces the lateral protrusion of the axle, minimizing unwanted contact with the ankle during pedaling.

The system's assembly is particularly simple thanks to the use of a single oversize screw, which securely connects the two axle halves. In terms of torque transmission efficiency, this system is comparable to that of a one-piece axle.

Despite the narrow side profile, the bearings are positioned outside the bottom bracket shell. This allows for a larger axle diameter, with the increased support width providing additional stiffness. These characteristics are enabled by the Ultra-Torque technology, which is based on the Hirth joint. This mechanical system originates from expertise in engine construction and was originally developed for coupling rotating shafts and engine components.

The Hirth joint serves as a self-centering and self-aligning coupling connection. It is located in the center of the bottom bracket axle and ensures a precise connection of the axle halves, which are firmly attached to the crank arms.
